Who Are We?

Thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven and some of his parishioners, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity.
 

Protecting the Defenseless

The Knights was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works.

The history of the Order shows how the foresight of Father Michael J. McGivney, whose cause for sainthood is being investigated by the Vatican, brought about what has become the world's foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. The Order has helped families obtain economic security and stability through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programs, and has contributed time and energy worldwide to service in communities.
 

 In Service to the Church, In Service to the World

The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to more than 14,000 councils and 1.8 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam and Saipan.

Our Knights of Columbus chapter is very active. Members meet the last Sunday of each month in the church hall. They sponsor delicious pancake breakfasts and spaghetti dinners. Funds raised by the Knights are used for charitable donations such as gift cards to be distributed to the poor, support for St. Wendelin School, and various projects around the church grounds and our community. One of these projects is the drain system in front of the church hall doors. Before the men worked their magic, rainwater used to settle and lay in front of the doors. Another is the addition of 52 padded chairs in the church hall. Look around the grounds for many other Knights of Columbus projects.

The men of St. Wendelin Parish started a K of C here to provide time to pray together, time for fellowship, help for the poor, and support for our school. Ron Hans is the current Grand Knight. All Catholic men over the age of 18 are invited to join St. Wendelin Knights of Columbus. Knights do not have to be members of the parish. All members are eligible for the K of C Insurance plans. Anyone interested should contact a current member or look for forms in the back of church
